Swami Asimananda Saraswati, the founder, was born in the year 1904 at a remote village Ramchandrapur in the district of Purulia, West Bengal, the then Manbhum in Bihar. His pre-‘sannyas’ name was Annada Kumar Chakraborty. Swamiji’s inborn qualities were multi dimensional. At the tender age of eight, he penned-down a verse, out of intense mortification, incitation and turbulence in his heart as a mark of protest against the order of singing eulogy to Emperor George V on his crowning festival. “ Eulogy to foreign rulers The dauntless spirit of his younger days turned him into a staunch patriot and this brought him close to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, in his struggle of freedom movement and many other National Leaders. It was Netaji’s inspiration “- to do something for the sightless” motivated him to setup “Netaji Eye Hospital” in 1953. Inhuman physical tortures were inflicted upon him by the then British rulers and he was sentenced to jail several times. But this could not deter him from his adopted principles of life. In the year 1941, he was initiated by Swami Kiranchand Darbeshji, disciple of Satguru Sri Sri Bijoykrishna Goswamiji – an eminent spiritual leader of India. In the core of his heart there was an unending source of compassion, love & sympathy towards the poor, the downtrodden and the suffering humanity and strong conviction that “Service to Humanity is Service to God”. The dire emergency of extending prompt help to the victims of great Bengal Famine in 1943 spurred Swamiji into action, leading him to organize the inception of Sri Sri Bijoykrishna Ashram Relief Society, in the remote village of Ramchandrapur and many other organizations there after. In the year 1947, he embraced “sannyas” at Prayag. Ananda Kumar was transformed into Swami Asimananda Saraswati. On one hand Swamiji was a poet, a littelateur, a journalist, a “Karma Yogi” engaged himself in the activities in bringing welfare into the lives of poor and under privileged, on the other hand the grandeur of his personality took a magnificent turn when he finally merged himself into “Satguru Acharya”, defining ways to achieving eternal peace and tranquility, a savior to a large number of agonized soul. In the year 1968, 13th August came his divine departure for the heavenly abode. Swamiji dedicated his birthday for the welfare of sightless, this week every year is observed by his devotees, followers & well wishers as "All India Blind Welfare Week" through out India. In his last wishes Swamiji appealed to his innumerable devotees, followers and well wishers – “The best reverence to me would lie in maintaining properly the institutions founded by me”.
